Automation Engineer

Job Description:

As part of our succession planning strategy, we are currently seeking applications to fill a number of Automation Technician positions within our Engineering Department at the Shotton Works site, which is 10 miles from Chester City centre.

In this role, you will be integral to our team, providing specialist engineering support to our manufacturing production lines.

The Automation Technician will respond to plant breakdowns, diagnosing faults to ensure the line is running again as soon as possible.

Your duties will also include carrying out design, software modifications, and improvements to the plant equipment while adhering to onsite software management systems.

Qualifications:

Time served apprenticeship and educated to HNC level or above in an Electrical/Electronic/Instrumentation discipline.

A minimum of significant experience working in a similar role or manufacturing environment.

Experience with Allen Bradley Control/Compact Logix OR Siemens S7 PLC’s is essential.

AC or DC Invertor drives, fault finding, commissioning, and programming.

Thorough understanding of relay logic and the ability to fault find from Engineering drawings – P&ID’S, Electrical Schematics, and control loop diagrams.

Instrumentation knowledge, maintaining and fault finding control loops.

Some knowledge of industrial communication protocols I.e. DeviceNet / Profibus / Profinet / TCP/IP.

Some SCADA and HMI development experience.

Methodical fault finding skills are essential.

Good knowledge of health and safety.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to work on own initiative.

Some knowledge of Hydraulic & Pneumatic systems.

Electrical Maintenance Engineer (Shifts)

Job Description:

The principal responsibilities of this role are to support operations teams by performing necessary breakdown repairs, leading preventative maintenance activity and facilitating the promotion of engineering solutions for process improvement to ensure process availability, business objectives and productivity targets are maintained.

Additional responsibilities:

Reporting and recording of maintenance and repair details for all work activities, using the appropriate maintenance management and IT systems

To support the department in the development and implementation of processes which comply with the Tata Steel H&S Management System

Utilising the planned maintenance system (Pirana), raising emerging work orders detailing non conformities observed and proposed corrective actions necessary to resolve issues

Support the Engineering team to determine root cause and measures appropriate to prevent reoccurrence

Ensuring clear and concise records are maintained in order trends can be determined and corrective actions identified

You will need to demonstrate a sound electrical background and proven track record. The successful candidate will operate as part of a small team and should be fully conversant with current health & safety regulations.

Ideally you will have experience of electrical maintenance and fault finding within a heavy engineering / industrial environment, essential to the role is the ability to adapt to new equipment. You must be flexible, have a desire to learn and develop.

Conducting local risk assessments to ensure safety during maintenance activities.

Performing breakdown repairs and leading preventative maintenance to optimize process availability and productivity.

Supporting process improvement initiatives by promoting engineering solutions.

Ensuring compliance with Tata Steel Health & Safety management systems.

Maintaining clear and concise records for trend analysis and corrective actions.

Managing engineering spares and inventory to minimize equipment downtime.

Adapting flexibly to short-notice maintenance requirements within the team and site context.

Actively participating in personal development to contribute to business succession plans.

We’re looking for a competent engineer with experience in Service Centre or manufacturing activities.

You should hold qualifications such as ONC or City & Guilds Mechanical/Electrical. Additionally, you’ll need:

Strong communication, organizational, and computer literacy skills.

Ability to work independently under pressure and within tight timescales.
